Prom Dresses
Americans have been going to dance for over a century. Short for promenade, formal dances first appeared in American colleges and universities in the 19th century. The attendees are dressed to the nines in tuxedos and white dresses sharp. Since they were based on debutante balls, the women also wear white gloves and dancing with many different partners.
The first high school dances were very formal affairs. Students appearing in their suits and dresses, drink tea and dance a couple of slow songs. Over time, children were given a little more freedom than previous generations. This may have had something to do with the war (WWII). The children were able to pick up their dates and take them to the prom on your own. Parents had little influence on these annual dances. Shortly thereafter, the guardian tradition of most American high schools.
Sounds like hard work, but most girls enjoy it. After all, the prom is often the first time is expected to pick a formal dress on their own. In a bat mitzvah, quinceañera, or communion, her mother usually selects her dress. But dance is different. Because it is seen by many as a rite of passage, a transition from adolescence to adulthood, girls are given more responsibility. Much more than boys, we might add.
Modern dress styles
Shopping for dancing is not easy. Most girls have only a few hundred dollars to spend on a dress, shoes and accessories. Everyone wants a completely original dress that will blow your friends and their dates away. But what they get is often much less. Prom Dress nightmares are so common they have become cliché. Every other girl seems to go for a fuchsia gown and then swollen overnight wonders why she chose. The good news is that the prom in the United States is big business.
Although dancing is still considered a formal event, dress codes have relaxed in recent years. More and more girls are wearing flirty cocktail dresses. Based on the legendary black dress, these numbers are striking strapless necklines, short skirts and back zipper. They are definitely not for the wallflower. Most young women love it because not only attractive and stylish, but can be used again, unlike most party dresses.
